A Bisbane renovation transforms this 1890's workers cottage into a contemporary inner-city oasis.
WHO LIVES HERE:
Home to interior designer Jordan Cash and her husband Dion, along with their six-month-old daughter Goldie, and dog, Forrest.
After purchasing their Hawthorne home in 2016, Dion and Jordan spent the next 12months embarking on a significant renovation that has transformed the mid-1890’s Queenslander into a contemporary inner-city oasis. When they first bought the home, they fell in love with all its quintessential Queenslander charm. So when it came to planning this renovation it was really important that we didn’t intrude on the original character of the home. We wanted to transform the space into something vastly different to the original, while still honouring the 120yr old heritage of the workers cottage.
We kept the front exterior of the house in its complete original form, a quaint little workers cottage. However once you step inside you’re greeted with an eclectic mix of timber, concrete and bursts of greenery - beautiful marriage between old and new. We brought Byron to the burbs with this reno! The identity of the home embodies the tropical Australian lifestyle, combining contemporary design with casual comfort and functionality. The home fuses relaxed sophistication with an eclectic beachside influence, playing with texture and tone. Open plan living allows all the main spaces to flow freely and effortlessly into one another making the home feel both spacious and intimate at the same time.
We wanted to create a space that was open and conversational perfect for the never-ending buzz of family life and entertaining. We have a big, loud family that love to eat; there are always people coming and going. So naturally, the kitchen is the heart of the home, with all rooms flowing off either side. The open plan living area has the ability to completely open up to the outdoor space, blurring the lines between inside and out and connecting the main living spaces to the pool. Perfect for balmy summer afternoon barbeques.
This project just so happened to double as my first project as a freelance interior designer and was the perfect way to sink my teeth into all elements of the design process and let my natural design identity thrive. I love to play with texture and layer modern and clean with the organic and interesting to create collected and authentic interiors. A deep intrinsic love for entertaining family/friends and living a relaxed coastal lifestyle are the roots of this renovation and I think this really translates through the way we designed this space.
